The Origins of Winemaking

In the old days, wine was a big deal. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, likely born from a happy accident involving fermenting grapes. We may never know who first crafted wine, but evidence suggests that ancient Middle Eastern civilizations were among the first to savour this nectar.

South Africa’s Stunning Wine Landscape

As time passed, wine spread across continents, with each culture adding its unique twist to the art of winemaking. Fast forward to the stunning landscape of South Africa, where vineyards and mountains create a breath-taking backdrop. It was here that Hugo embarked on a journey to rekindle his love for wine.

The Unique Charm of Grenache Blanc

His quest led him to a thirty-something-year-old single vineyard perched atop the Piekenierskloof Pass—a hidden gem that would become our Blokhuis Grenache Blanc. I can still hear the excitement in his voice as he described the vineyard’s incredible potential.

We adore this wine for the balance it strikes between Chardonnay’s elegance and Chenin’s zest. Each sip—crafted from around 600 to 800 individual grapes per bunch—unfolds vibrant flavours and creamy notes, inviting you to taste the love in every drop. While most South African white wines are best enjoyed within a few years of harvest, this Grenache Blanc has shown remarkable improvement with age, making the latest vintage the one to savour now.

When it comes to our Blokhuis Grenache Blanc, we prefer cork because it allows the wine to breathe and develop its flavours over time—giving it a little extra room to develop! With each cork pop, you’re not just opening a bottle; you’re unveiling a world of aromas and notes that continue to unfold with every sip.
